What is a Shared Parental Leave (Birth) Policy?
Shared Parental Leave (SPL) gives more choice in how 2 parents can care for their child. Eligible parents who are sharing responsibility for a child can get SPL in the first year after:
- the birth of their child
- adopting a child
- getting a parental order if they had the child through surrogacy
If both parents are eligible, they will be able to choose how to split the available leave between them and can decide to be off work at the same time or at different times. They may be able to take leave in more than one block.
Why is a Shared Parental Leave (Birth) Policy important?
This policy outlines the arrangements for shared parental leave and pay in relation to the birth of a child. If you are adopting a child please see the Shared Parental Leave (Adoption) Policy instead.
