What is an Equal Opportunities Policy?

Improving equality, diversity and inclusion in your workplace can help make your company more successful, by motivating employees and preventing legal or serious issues arising from bullying, harassment and discrimination. This policy can be quickly configured to include the aspects of equality, diversity and inclusion that are relevant and important to your firm.

Set out your Company’s commitment to equality within the workplace. This means equal job opportunities and fairness for employees and job applicants. You must not treat people unfairly because of reasons protected by discrimination law (‘protected characteristics’).

For example, because of a person’s sex, age or race. Make it clear that decisions within employment, recruitment, progression and dismissal are based solely on employee merit and employer need.

Why is an Equal Opportunities Policy important?

Demonstrate that your Company values diversity within the workforce. For example, this might mean people with different ages, religions, ethnicities, people with disabilities, and both men and women.

The policy covers all forms of unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation at work, and contains sections on training, adjustments for disability, monitoring, grievances and sanctions.
